Professional Journalistic Work

News Writing

I was a newspaper reporter at the Hattiesburg American (Hattiesburg, MS) from 1996-1998. The attached articles are samples of original work I did there.

Recent Media Work

Documentary

The University of Southern Mississippi Freedom50 Research Group, with grant funding provided by the Mississippi Humanities Council, produced the documentary titled, “Measure of Progress: The Clyde Kennard Story.” The interdisciplinary research group was formed in 2015 for the purpose of producing work that investigated racial progress at the university and the surrounding community. The documentary was one of three major research works produced by the group. This documentary gave me the opportunity to do archival journalistic work in addition to the research for content.

Digital Work

The Unheard Word project: In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of The Unheard Word, a publication created for Black students at the University of Southern Mississippi and circulated between fall 1990 and spring 1993, I helped coordinate and produce a digital version of the publication. Dr. Riva Brown, founder of The Unheard Word, produced this project with the support of the Center for Black Studies and assistance from the Southern Miss Association of Black Journalists (SMABJ), a student group for which I serve as advisor.

Student Work

As a professor of journalism for over 20 years, I have directed a wide-range of student projects and journalistic work. Students have applied my course instruction and mentorship to complete digital content and multimedia projects.
